Jimmy Greaves is the greatest goal scorer in Tottenham Hotspur’s history, probably the greatest goal scorer in the history of British football, and arguably the greatest goal scorer ever to play the game. Signed by Bill Nicholson from AC Milan in late 1961 for £99,999, Greaves went on to score 266 goals in 380 games for Spurs and scored in both the 1962 FA Cup Final and 1963 UEFA European Cup Winners Cup Final victories, and collected another FA Cup Winners medal with Spurs in 1967.

Jimmy Greaves is synonymous with The Spurs No8 Shirt in the 1960' s but, when Bill Nicholson signed Greavesie from AC Milan in December 1961, John White wore The No8 Shirt for The Lilywhites. The 1961 Double Winners began 1961-62 winning The FA Charity Shield in a 3-2 victory at White Hart Lane versus England Manager Walter Winterbottom's FA Select XI Team. 7 players in that FA Charity Shield Match played in every game for The Three Lions at the 1962 FIFA World Cup:- Ron Springett; Jimmy Armfield; Ron Flowers; Bryan Douglas; Johnny Haynes and Bobby Charlton of The FA Select XI Team, and Maurice Norman of Tottenham Hotspur. The only other players to play every minute for England at World Cup '62 were Bobby Moore and Jimmy Greaves.
Bill Nicholson's Tottenham Hotspur retained The FA Cup in 1962 beating Burnley 3-1 in The FA Cup Final at Wembley with Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith and Danny Blanchflower scoring but, Alf Ramsey led Ipswich Town to The First Division Championship Title. Bill Nicholson and Alf Ramsey were both integral members of the Arthur Rowe Tottenham Hotspur Push-and-Run team that won the 1951 Football League Division One Championship. In The 1961-62 UEFA European Cup, Spurs took European Champions Benfica to the wire in the semi final. Jimmy Greaves had a goal disallowed in the 1st leg in Lisbon, and then Greaves again, and Bobby Smith had goals disallowed in the 2nd Leg at White Hart Lane. Spurs would have to wait another year for their first UEFA European Final but, that's a different story and a different shirt.
